Preparing for a music exam

Build a plan with the teacher, and give each part of the exam attention.

Understand the requirements

Confirm the current syllabus, examination format and entry requirements with your teacher and the examination board. Requirements can vary by grade and route.

Prepare beyond the pieces

Ask the teacher which supporting skills are assessed for the chosen examination. Build those into the learning plan rather than leaving them until the final weeks.

Practise the complete experience

When ready, rehearse the relevant parts in sequence and discuss anything that feels uncertain. The aim is familiarity with both the music and the process.
